How do people do it? Riley is learning to stand up, and all he wants to do is pull up and try to walk. With that adventure comes accidents...we've had a few minor bumps. Then, there is the more serious bump. He fell face first into the dresser in his room the other night and landed right on one of the pull knobs - right between the eyes. All I could do was call out to Jesus...those are the only words that would come as he sobbed and sobbed. Then, I praised God he didn't hit his eye. All the while, freaking out...
Matt, however is calm. How does he do that? It is very...well...irritating to those of us who cannot do anything but freak out!
I would love to say that was an isolate incident; that normally, I don't react that way...however...
Yesterday, my wonderful husband took Riley and I out to lunch. In the middle of the Mexican restaurant, Riley decides he has forgotten how to chew and eat. He begins to choke. I, in normal fashion, panic.
Matt, calmly, of course, says, "Pick him up." I grab him up and start pounding on his back as everyone looks on, some giving me advice (hello - shut up!). Anyway, once I realize that he is okay, I turn to Matt and, in what I thought was a whisper, say, "I'm freaking out!" He just calmly says, "We see that."
Once in the car, he begins to laugh at me. He proceeds to tell me that my freaking out comment was quite loud and everyone already knew I was freaking out. I didn't really need to make an announcement.
He continually tells me to calm down, which only makes it worse. Just once, I would like to remain calm - just to see how it feels...

Girlie... don't worry. I PROMISE they are hugely more resliant than we give them credit for and they will survive. TRUST me!
ReplyDeleteIf you remember within like a 3 month span I was in the ER 4 times with my crew. 1 broken arm, one mild concussion, a major goose-egg and a possible poisioning from eating a Peace Lily!
I will tell you though it gets easier to relax when such luck abounds with subsequent children... just one more thing to add to your list as to why you should have MORE!
I LOVE YOU... and freaking out it perfectly acceptable to a first time mom. :)
Been there ! My son is barely two months older than yours and though he is waiting to be 100% certain to not fall before he takes his first real steps on the hardwood floor, he has started to realize that walking is much faster than crawling. He made a few dives that would make Alexandre Despatie shy. Course, he cut himself all the way to the edge of his eye.
ReplyDeleteGuess what was the first emotion that came to me ? Yeah, panic !
That lasted the whole of 10 seconds, because I was alone with him at the time and so I went to mummy mode and tending to him was my top priority. But once I made sure that the eye was intact, that there would not be any swelling, and after a brief prayer to thank the Lord, I sat on the couch and was just shaking there for a while.
They say in French "C'est le métier qui rentre" which means something like you're in the process of learning your new job, it's Okay. He could not dream of a better mom anyway !
